Question: When Can The President Promote Himself To King?
Answer: When Congress demotes itself to “kaffee klatsch.”
If the Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, lets stand what the President has done by issuing numerous “signing statements” regarding his understanding of whether certain legislation is indeed constitutional, then they might just as well break out the Coffee-Mate.
From the beginning of the Republic to the year 2000, presidents used “signing statements” to challenge the constitutionality of certain laws. According to an
American Bar Association bipartisan committee report, President Bush has already done so more than 800 times.
The ABA report urged President Bush to either sign any given bill into law and enforce it, or veto it. Signing the bill and issuing a “signing statement” indicating that he believes the bill is unconstitutional and he will not enforce certain parts doesn’t cut it.
Congress can either face the President down now or go ahead coronate him themselves. There’s really not much middle ground on this issue.
