If You Don’t Fight For Your Freedom, Who Will?

“What if they had a war and nobody came?” was a popular bumper sticker slogan when I was young.  Often attributed to Bertolt Brecht, the full quote is perhaps more accurately and fully translated this way:

“Imagine there’s a war and nobody goes to it – then the war comes to you!  The one who remains at home when the fight begins, and leaves others to fight for his cause, that one must beware.  Those who do not participate in the fighting will participate in defeat.  The one who wants to avoid a fight never does, because the one who did not fight for his cause will wind up fighting for his enemy’s.”

If your cause is freedom, and you don’t fight for it, then you will lose your freedom to those who wish to take it.

If you don’t fight for your right to be secure in your person, house, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, and for your right not to be arrested or searched unless that arrest or search was based upon a warrant, based upon probable cause, supported by a sworn statement by the person who wants to arrest or search you or your home, then those who wish to take will continue to take it.

Sen. Russ Feingold’s proposal to censure the President may be the boldest move in the U.S. Congress, but it is by no means bold enough.

President Bush should be impeached right away.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m not an enthusiastic Democrat.  I’m neither a Democrat nor a Republican.

I thought that after Clinton lied before a grand jury, he deserved to be impeached.

But President Clinton’s perjury, though serious, is small potatoes compared to what President Bush has done.

If your cause is truth, then you must actively denounce President Bush’s lies that warrantless wiretaps were authorized by Congress in its authorization for the use of military force in 2001.

If your cause is national security, and you are willing to give up an essential liberty for it, then you deserve neither.  Benjamin Franklin said as much.
