Some criminal clients ask if they need an investigator.  That depends on the case.

The police report often doesn't tell the whole story.  When they investigate and write their reports, officers frequently try to anticipate what the prosecutor will need to prove his case.  They certainly aren't thinking about helping the defense.

Sometimes you will know who the witnesses are.  In some situations, an investigator is needed to locate witnesses for you.

If you decide to go to trial, your odds of winning improve considerably if someone has investigated the facts with your needs in mind.
