Here’s what I tell probationers who are having trouble with their probation officer.

Your P.O. is trying to figure out whether you are: (1) somebody who he needs to mess with; or (2) somebody who is taking care of his business with the probation office, has a good attitude, and is getting his life together.

So how do you convince him that you aren’t somebody he needs to mess with?  Here’s how.

If you think your probation officer treats you unfairly, then act like you think his injustice is the greatest thing that ever happened to you.

If you think your probation officer acts like a jerk with you, act like you think his behavior is absolutely appropriate.

Your attitude should be this: if your P.O. tells you to jump, ask “how high, and when can I come down?”

Once your P.O. sees, month after month, that you are taking care of your business with the probation office, then pretty soon he’ll say, “hey, you know what?  You’ve been doing so well that you don’t even need to report in person next month.  Just report by phone next month and mail in the money to pay your fees.”

That’s when you know that you are on the right track.

Many of you will hate doing what I recommend here, and to tell you the truth, I can’t blame you.

But the bottom line is: the judge who hears your case has a lot of power over your life.  And that judge has a lot of faith in the probation department.  In fact, there is an officer from the probation department assigned to each and every one of the criminal courts.  The judge talks to that probation officer every day.  And that officer speaks for the officer who supervises you.  In other words, your probation officer has friends in high places.
